■MHI (Japan): Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is to introduce a commercial refrigeration condensing unit using CO2 refrigerant. The HCCV1001, due to go on sale in April, is aimed at the cold storage and retail refrigerated and frozen food markets. The new 10hp condensing unit employs MHI’s proprietary two-stage GSR compressor, which integrates a scroll compressor and a rotary compressor. The rotary compression mechanism, which offers advantages at low-pressure ratios, is operated at the first stage compression. The scroll is adopted at the second stage compression for the high-pressure ratios. Gas injection, featuring a gas-liquid separator in the intermediate-pressure vessel, is designed to ensure refrigerating capacity and high efficiency throughout the HCCV1001’s operating range. Suitable for operating in an ambient range of -15°C to +43°C and an operating temperature range of -45°C to -5°C, the HCCV1001 can accommodate diverse refrigeration and freezing needs. The HCCV1001’s maximum pipe length is set at 100m, which allows for the convenient replacement of existing units. In addition, it also facilitates mixed installations through the use of the same external dimensions as outdoor units of MHI’s multi system air-conditioners for commercial applications. ■Toshiba (UK): Aiming to build on the success of its award-winning SMMS-e, Toshiba’s new SHRM-e 3-pipe heat recovery VRF air conditioning system boasts ESEERs above 7 on all models. SHRM-e is said to deliver a number of improvements made possible by developments in key technologies such as the compressor and intelligent control system, supported by a variety of incremental improvements in almost all system components. A new rotary compressor, developed and manufactured by Toshiba, uses a two-stage compression process for improved efficiency and performance. Wear surfaces on compression vanes are treated with a diamond-like carbon coating to improve wear-resistance and reliability. This enables a higher duty to be obtained from a smaller compressor, with less power. According to Toshiba, the displacement volume is up to 50% greater than for the previous generation of VRF systems. The SHRM-e is also said to be able to provide continuous heating. This is made possible by the use of a new hot-gas bypass control, which simultaneously defrosts outdoor heat exchanger coils, while allowing the indoor unit to continue operating in heating mode. Maximum total pipe work length for SHRM-e is 1000m, double the previous allowable length, with the maximum actual length between an FS unit and a fan coil unit now 50m – versus 15m for the previous model. The operating temperature range has also been extended, and is now -10ºC to 46ºC for cooling operation and -25ºC to 15.5ºC in heating mode. Cooling Post 20170217
■Refrigerant (USA): A search of more than 60 million chemicals to find a replacement for R410A in air conditioning systems has found just 27 suitably-efficient fluids – but all are at least slightly flammable. R32 has been introduced by Daikin and others for use in small splits and propane is also being considered in similar applications in some Far East markets. However, their flammability precludes their use under current national and international safety standards in all but the smaller systems. The report focuses on single-component refrigerants (that is, pure fluids) but recognises that refrigerant blends offer additional possibilities, although the trade-off to reducing flammability will be higher GWPs. ■Thailand : Japanese companies operating in Thailand, while expressing their sympathies for the death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, are carefully assessing the impacts on their businesses in the Southeast Asian country. Economic activities in Thailand are expected to slow, as the death of the world’s longest-serving monarch saddened people in the country and could put a brake on consumption and corporate capital spending.
